Top Ten Films 2018

YWNRH Poster

At the beginning of 2018 I decided to keep a list of all the films I watched at the cinema throughout the year. I offer only one explanation in regards to the order of this list; Phantom Thread probably deserves to be higher than number 4, it’s technically a better film than Black 47 but ultimately, whilst I loved Phantom Thread, I enjoyed watching Black 47 more.

1. You Were Never Really Here  – Directed by Lynne Ramsay

 2. The Shape of Water – Directed by Guillermo Del Torro

3. Black 47 – Directed by Lance Daley

4. Phantom Thread – Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson

5. Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Directed by Stefano Sollima

6. American Animals – Directed by Bart Layton

7. BlacKkKlansman – Directed by Spike Lee

8. Isle of Dogs – Directed by Wes Anderson

9. Lady Bird – Directed by Greta Gerwig

10. I, Tonya – Directed by Craig Gillespie

Notable mentions:

  • Deadpool 2 – Directed by David Leitch: It’s daft but it’s a very enjoyable kind of daft.
  • A Simple Favor – Directed by Paul Feig: A bit like Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train except that it remembers not to take itself too seriously.
  • Suspiria – Directed by Luca Guadagnino: I’ve never seen the original so I can’t compare but, I did find this to be an enjoyable horror film which had the ambience of an authentic 70s horror film.
